RRB Junior Engineer (JE) 2024 - Important Dates - Eligibility - Vacancy Details - Exam Pattern - All Explained

Indian Railway hires its staff through 21 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), which releases combined notification for recruitment.
One of the popular recruitments done by RRBs is of Junior Engineers (JE). This year, Railways has released Centralised Employment Notice (CEN 03/2024) for RRB Junior Engineer (JE) 2024 on 27th July 2024 for 7951 posts.
This notification includes posts of:

1. Junior Engineer(JE), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA): 7934 vacancies.
2. Chemical Supervisor/Research (CSR) and Metallurgical Supervisor/Research (MSR): 17 vacancies (in only RRB Gorakhpur).

(Zone-wise vacancies are given in the last paragraphs).


Important Dates:
Application Starts: 30th July 2024
Application Ends: 29th August 2024
Correction Window: 30th August to 8th September 2024.
Exam Date: will be notified later.

Application Fees:
For Males of UR/EWS/OBC: ₹500
For Females (all categories): ₹250
For SC/ST/PH: ₹250

Note: After you've appeared in the first stage CBT exam, you will recieve a refund of your application fees in your account, as follows:
a. ₹400 for Males of UR/EWS/OBC.
b. ₹250 for Females/SC/ST/PH.

Age Limit of all posts:
1. Junior Engineer(JE):
18 to 36 years
2. Depot Material Superintendent (DMS): 18 to 36 years
3. Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA): 18 to 36 years
4. Metallurgical Supervisor/Research (MSR): 18 to 36 years
5. Chemical Supervisor/Research (CSR): 18 to 36 years

Note: In normal process, the age limit for these posts are 18 to 33 years only. But this year, a one-time relaxation of 3 years in upper age limit is being given to candidates (because the vacancies have come after a long break).

Age relaxation in upper age limit will be given to candidates of:
1. OBC (NCL): 3 years
2. SC/ST: 5 years
3. Ex-servicemen (UR & EWS): 3 years (after deduction of length of service from age).
4. Ex-servicemen (OBC-NCL): 6 years (after deduction of length of service from age).
5. Ex-servicemen (SC/ST): 8 years (after deduction of length of service from age).
6. Physically Handicapped (UR & EWS): 10 years
7. Physically Handicapped (OBC-NCL): 13 years
8. Physically Handicapped (SC/ST): 15 years
9. Candidates serving Group 'C', erstwhile Group 'D' Railway staff & Substitutes with minimum 3 years of service in railways (continuous or in broken spells):
a. For UR & EWS: till 40 years of age.
b. For OBC-NCL: till 43 years of age.
c. For SC/ST: till 45 years of age.

10. Candidates working in Railway Quasi-Administrative offices such as Railway Canteens, Co-operative Societies & Institutes: Up to the length of service rendered or 5 years (whichever is less).
11. Female candidates, who are widowed, divorced, or judicially separated from husband but not remarried:
a. For UR & EWS: till 35 years of age.
b. For OBC-NCL: till 38 years of age.
c. For SC/ST: till 40 years of age.



Salary level of all posts:
1. Junior Engineer(JE): level-6
2. Depot Material Superintendent (DMS): level-6
3. Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA): level-6
4. Chemical Supervisor/Research (CSR): level-7
5. Metallurgical Supervisor/Research (MSR): level-7

• The basic pay for level-6 (JE/DMS/CMA) in X-city will be: ₹35,400

• The basic pay for level-7 (CSR/MSR) in X-city will be: ₹44,900

• The in-hand salary for level-6 (JE/DMS/CMA) in X-city (with 50% DA) will be: ₹60,360

• The in-hand salary for level-7 (CSR/MSR) in X-city (with 50% DA) will be: ₹74,175


Educational Qualification required for JE/DMD/CMA/CSR/MSR):

1. Junior Engineer - Civil/Works/Design (JE/Civil):
(a) Three years Diploma in Civil Engineering or B.Sc. in Civil Engineering of three years duration, OR;
(b) a combination of any sub stream of basic streams of Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute.

2. Junior Engineer - Electrical (JE/Electrical):
(a) Three years Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical / Electronics Engineering, OR;
(b) a combination of any sub stream of basic streams of Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics Engineering from a recognized University/Institute.

3. Junior Engineer - Mechanical (JE/Mechanical):
(a) Three years Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Manufacturing /Mechatronics / Industrial / Machining / Instrumentation and Control / Tools and Machining / Tools and Die Making / Automobile / Production Engineering, OR;
(b) a combination of any sub stream of basic streams of Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Manufacturing /Mechatronics / Industrial / Machining / Instrumentation and Control / Tools and Machining / Tools and Die Making / Automobile / Production Engineering from a recognised University/Institute.

4. Junior Engineer - Diesel Electrical (JE/Diesel Electrical):
(a) Three years Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics Engineering OR;
(b) a combination of any sub stream of basic streams of Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics Engineering from a recognised University/Institute.

5. Junior Engineer - Signal and Traffic (JE/S and T):
(a) Three years Diploma in Electrical / Electronics / Information Technology / Communication Engineering / Computer Science and Engineering / Computer Science /Computer Engineering, OR;
(b) a combination of any sub stream of basic streams of Electrical / Electronics / Information Technology / Communication Engineering / Computer Science and Engineering / Computer Science / Computer Engineering from a recognized University / Institute.

6. Junior Engineer - Track Machine (JE/Track Machine):
(a) Three years Diploma in Mechanical / Production / Automobile / Electrical / Electronics / Instrumentation and Control Engineering, OR;
(b) a combination of any sub stream of basic streams of Mechanical / Production / Automobile / Electrical / Electronics / Instrumentation and Control Engineering from a recognized University /Institute.

7. Depot Material Superintendent (DMS):
Three Years Diploma in Engineering in any discipline from a recognized University /Institution.

8. Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (CMA):
Bachelors Degree in Science with Physics and Chemistry with minimum of 45% marks from a recognized University / Institute.

9. Chemical Supervisor/Research (CSR):
Degree or its equivalent in Chemical Technology from a recognized University / Institution covering any one or more of the following fields:
a) Petroleum Products,
b) Paints and Corrosion Prevention
c) Polymers.
Knowledge of any computer language will be essential.

10. Metallurgical Supervisor/Research (MSR):
Degree or its equivalent in Metallurgical Engineering from a recognized University / Institution.
Knowledge of any computer language will be essential.


• Important Note:
Higher Qualifications such as B.E/B. Tech are also acceptable in lieu of Three years Diploma in Engineering in the same Discipline.


Exam Pattern:
Exam will be conducted in two stages, and both will be computer-based tests (CBT).

A. 1st Stage CBT: For shortlisting candidates for 2nd Stage CBT.
It contains questions from:
1. Mathematics: 30 questions - 30 marks
2. Reasoning: 25 questions - 25 marks
3. General Awareness: 15 questions - 15 marks
4. General Science: 30 questions - 30 marks

Total: 100 questions - 100 marks
Time Duration: 90 minutes.
Negative Marking: 1/3rd (-0.33 marks).


Number of candidates shortlisted for 2nd Stage CBT: 15 times the vacancy.

B. 2nd Stage CBT: For preparing Final Merit List for selection in to the service.
It contains questions from:
1. General Awareness: 15 questions - 15 marks
2. Physics & Chemistry: 15 questions - 15 marks
3. Basics of Computers and Applications: 10 questions - 10 marks
4. Basics of Environment and Pollution Control: 10 questions - 10 marks
5. Technical Abilities: 100 questions - 100 marks

Total: 150 questions - 150 marks
Time Duration: 120 minutes.
Negative Marking: 1/3rd (-0.33 marks).
