Top 15 Ways To Get Government Jobs In The Indian Health Department - Medical Sector Government Jobs

Many aspirants want to work in the healthcare sector or the Indian Health Department, but they are not aware of the ways.

Any Doctor/Nurse/Paramedics can join as a Medical Staff/Officers/Researchers. But do you know that, even candidates with Non-medical Background Candidates join the health department in various roles, such as Administration staff/officers, support staffs, etc.

There are many ways by which you can join the Indian Health Department/get a government job in healthcare sector. I have listed some of the top 15 most common ways here in this blog.

1. UPSC Combined Medical Service (CMS) Exam:
• If you're an MBBS Graduate, you can give this exam conducted annually by UPSC, to become a Medical Officer in Railways, CGHS Hospitals, Central Institutes, etc.

2. Armed Forces Medical Service:
• After passing your 12th exam only, you can join this in three ways:
(i) As a sepoy: through Army recruitment rally.
(ii) Through admission in Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) through NEET exam, and after completing course, commission as Lieutenant in Armed Forces Medical Service.
(iii) Through admission in AFMC in Nursing Course (only for female), and after completing course, commission as nursing officer (lieutenant rank) in Military Nursing Services.
• After completing your BDS/MDS, you can join as Lieutenant in Armed Forces Dental Service.
• After completing MBBS/PG, you can also join as Lieutenant in Armed Forces Medical Service, in Short Service Commission.

3. Lateral Recruitment:
Every 2–3 months, UPSC releases notification for lateral entry of various Specialists & Super Specialist doctors in CGHS, Railway & Central Institutes.

4. State Government Recruitment:
Every State Government conducts exams/Interviews for recruitment of Medical Officers (mostly for post graduates) in their district hospitals.

5. Walk-in-interview:
For hiring Junior Residents (JR)/Senior Residents (SR)/Nursing staff/Pharmacists/ Paramedical Staff/Non-medical support staffs, state medical colleges & state hospitals conduct walk-in-interviews (whose information is published in local newspapers/college websites).

6. Join ICMR:
Every year Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducts Walk-in-interviews or recruitment tests for hiring Researchers/other support staffs.

7. Join as a Researcher:
After your MSc/MPharma/MTech/ MBBS/MD/MS, you can join as a researcher in various fields like Microbiology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, Pathology, etc in Research Institutes like CDRI, NIMHANS, PGIMER, AIIMS, JIPMER, etc through UGC NET JRF/Walk-in-interviews.

8. Medical College Recruitment Tests:
Sometimes Medical Colleges like AIIMS, PGI, JIPMER, etc may conduct written exams for recruitment of Nursing, Pharmacists, Paramedics, and, Non-medical support staffs.

9. Community Health Officers:
For BSc Nursing Graduates, every state government (under National Health Mission), releases vacancies for Community Health Officers in Sub-centres of Primary Health Centres (PHC).

10. AIIMS NORCET Exam:
This exam is conducted by AIIMS for hiring Nursing Officers in their institute.

11. Railway Paramedical Exam:
For hiring Nurses and Paramedics in Railway Hospitals. It even has a post of Field Worker, which requires you to be just 12th pass in Science Stream.

12. SSC Phase Exam:
Every year, SSC recruits Dental Technicians, Pharmacists, ECG Technicians, and other Paramedics and support staff in various CGHS Hospitals and Central Institutes through SSC Phase Exams.

13. State level Health Worker Exams:
ANM/GNM candidates (generally female) are recruited by the state government, for providing grassroot level (door to door) medical facilities in the state (mostly in rural areas) like vaccination, distribution of free medicines, First Aid Treatment, delivering babies, etc.

14. State Level Field Worker Exams:
Recently Jharkhand State released notification for filling vacancies of Field Worker.
In the same way, different state governments hire field workers by recruiting 10th/12th pass candidates, and training them to work on the field, for spreading awareness & distribution of health supplements.
In the later phase of their career, these field workers become "Health Inspectors".

15. General Competition like UPSC CSE/SSC CGL/SSC Steno/SSC CHSL:
• This route is for Non-medical Background Candidates.
• If you become an IAS (through UPSC CSE), you can become Director/Joint Secretary/Additional Secretary/Secretary, and lead the entire Indian Health Department.
• If you become ASO in CSS through SSC CGL, you can become Assistant Section Officer/Section Officer/Under Secretary/Deputy Secretary, which are the Junior Administrative Grades in Indian Health Department.
• You can join as a Stenographer/Personal Assistant/Private Secretary, and assist Higher Officials in managing their day-to-day work in the Health Department.
• You can join as a Clerk through SSC CHSL, and maintain data/records of Health Department.
• You can join as Section Officer/Clerks in your State Health Department too, but for that, you will have to give state recruitment exams.
