SSC CGL 2024 Notification Released | What is SSC CGL Exam - How to Apply - All Details Here

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organisation under Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Every year, it conducts various examinations for appointment of staffs and officers in various government departments/organisations.

One of the most popular examinations conducted by SSC is Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination. It recruits graduate staff and junior officers for the central government.

Some of the popular posts of CGL are Income Tax Inspector, GST Inspector, Assistant Section Officer, Preventive Officer, Assistant Enforcement Officer, CBI Sub-inspector, etc.

Here in this article, I will clear all your doubts regarding the SSC CGL 2024 exam.


Important dates of SSC CGL 2024:

Application Begins: 24th June 2024
Application Ends: 24th July 2024
1st Stage (Prelims) Exam Date: Last Week of September 2024
2nd Stage (Mains) Exam Date: Last Week of December 2024.

Form Fees: ₹100 for General/EWS/OBC,
and,
₹0 for SC/ST/PH/Female candidates.


Tentative vacancies in CGL 2024: This time, SSC has released very good number of vacancies (almost double than regular) and that is 17727+ vacancies.

This may even increase/decrease in future. So it's not final, but tentative vacancy.


Basic eligibility for SSC CGL examination:

1. Nationality:

A candidate must be either:
a. A citizen of India, or,
b. A subject of Nepal, or,
c. A subject of Bhutan, or,
d. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Note: A candidate belonging to categories b, c and d above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.


2. Age limit (as on 01-08-2024):

For ASO (CSS, Railways, MEA, AFHQ) and Sub-inspector CBI: 20 - 30 years
For Junior Statistical Officer (JSO): 18 - 32 years
For all other Group B posts: 18 - 30 years
For Group C posts: 18 - 27 years.

Note: OBC candidates get an upper age relaxation of 3 years.

Note: SC/ST candidates get an upper age relaxation of 5 years.

Note: Physically Handicapped (Unreserved/EWS) get get an upper age relaxation of 10 years.

Note: Physically Handicapped (OBC) gets an upper age relaxation of 13 years.

Note: Physically Handicapped (SC/ST) get an upper age relaxation of 15 years.


3. Educational qualification:

Graduate from any UGC recognised university.

Note: You are eligible to apply if you are graduate from a recognised university. It doesn't matter whether your degree is from regular or distance mode (like IGNOU), you just have to be a graduate.

Note: Your final result must come before 01 August 2024, otherwise you'll become ineligible.

Some posts require specific qualifications like:

A. Junior Statistical Officer: Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute with at least 60% Marks in Mathematics at 12th standard level; OR;
Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.

B. Statistical Investigator Grade-II: Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects from a recognized University or Institute. The candidates must have studied Statistics as a subject in all the three years or all the six semesters of the graduation course.

C. Research Assistant in National Human Rights Commission (NHRC):
• Essential Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University.
• Desirable Qualifications:
a. Minimum one-year research experience in any recognized university or recognized Research Institution;
b. Degree in Law or Human Rights from a recognized university.


What posts are included in this SSC CGL 2024 Recruitment?

There are various Group B and Group C posts included in CGL Exam. They are of different departments/organisations and have different pay levels:

A. Group-B post with Pay level 7 (4600 Grade Pay):

1. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Central Secretariat Service (CSS).

2. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Intelligence Bureau (IB).

3. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Ministry of Railways.

4. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

5. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Armed Forces Headquarters (AFHQ).

6. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY)

7. Assistant/ Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Other Ministries/ Departments/ Organizations.

8. Inspector of Income Tax in Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

9. Inspector of Central Excise (GST) in Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customes (CBIC).

10. Inspector (Preventive Officer) in Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

11. Inspector (Examiner) in Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

12. Assistant Enforcement Officer (AEO) in Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Department of Revenue.

13. Sub Inspector in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

14. Inspector Posts in Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications.

15. Inspector in Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), Ministry of Finance.


B. Group-B post with Pay level 6 (4200 Grade Pay):

1. Assistant in Other Ministries/ Departments/ Organizations.

2. Executive Assistant in Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

3. Research Assistant in National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

4. Divisional Accountant in Offices under Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

5. Sub Inspector in National Investigation Agency (NIA).

6. Sub Inspector/ Junior Intelligence Officer in Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Ministry of Home Affairs.

7. Junior Statistical Officer in Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation.


C. Group-C post with Pay level 5 (2800 Grade Pay):

1. Auditor in Offices under Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

2. Auditor in Offices under Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA).

3. Auditor in Other Ministry/ Departments.

4. Accountant in Offices under Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

5. Accountant in Offices under Controller General of Accounts.

6. Accountant/ Junior Accountant in Other Ministry/ Departments.


D. Group-C post with Pay level 4 (2400 Grade Pay):

1. Postal Assistant/ Sorting Assistant in Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications.

2. Senior Secretariat Assistant/ Upper Division Clerks Central Government Offices/ Ministries other than Central Secretariat Clerical Service (CSCS) cadres.

3. Senior Administrative Assistant in Military Engineering Services, Ministry of Defence.

4. Tax Assistant in Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

5. Tax Assistant in Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

6. Sub Inspector in Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), Ministry of Finance.


SSC CGL 2024 Exam Pattern:

CGL Exam will be conducted in two stages:

1. Tier-1: For shortlisting candidates for next stage. It's marks has no contribution in final merit.

2. Tier-2: For preparation of final merit, on basis of which, you'll be selected into the services (according to your preferences).

• Tier-1 Exam Pattern:

Questions: 100 (MCQ type)
Time: 1 hour (60 minutes)
Marking scheme: +2 for correct answers and -0.5 for wrong answers.
Subjects: Mathematics, Reasoning, English and General Awareness (25 questions from each subjects).

• Tier-2 Exam Pattern:

This Tier is divided into two papers:

1. Paper-1: compulsory for all candidates.

Paper-1 has two sessions:

a. Session-1: It has three sections:

Section-1: It has two subjects - Mathematical Abilities (30 questions) and Reasoning (30 questions).
Total: 60 questions (Objective type)
Time: 1 hour (60 minutes)
Total marks: 3x60 = 180 marks
Negative marking: -1/3rd (-1 for each wrong answer).

Section-2: It has two subjects - English (45 questions) and General Awareness (25 questions).
Total: 70 questions (Objective type)
Time: 1 hour (60 minutes)
Total marks: 3x70 = 210 marks
Negative marking: -1/3rd (-1 for each wrong answer).

Section-3: Computer Knowledge Module
Questions: 20 questions (Objective type)
Time: 15 minutes
Total marks: 3x20 = 60 marks
Negative marking: -1/3rd (-1 for each wrong answer).


b. Session-2: Data Entry Speed Test Module
Time: 15 minutes
One Data Entry Task (Qualifying in nature).

Total marks of Paper-1: 450 marks (merit list will be prepared on the basis of scores in Paper-1)


2. Paper-2: only for Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) and Statistical Investigator Grade-2.
Questions: 100 (Objective type)
Time: 2 hours.
Marks: 2x100 = 200.
Negative marking: -1/4th (-0.5 for each wrong answer).


How to apply for SSC CGL 2024?

Follow these eight simple steps:

1. One-Time Registration: Register yourself on SSC website (ssc.gov.in), and generate registration number and password. If you have done it before, then ignore this step.

2. Log in to your SSC account, with that registration number and password.

3. In the Live Application Section, you will find option of Combined Graduate Level (CGL), click on Apply.

4. Now fill all the personal and academic details, choose your centre preferences, etc.

5. For uploading photos, you'll have to capture live photo of yourself. For this purpose, you have to install "MySSC" app from Google PlayStore, and login with the same registration number and password.

6. Once you capture your live photograph, return to the SSC website, upload your signature, and proceed.

7. Preview all your details, and once you have verified, click on submit.

8. Now pay the ₹100 fees (if you are UR/OBC/EWS male candidate), and your application is complete.
