SSC Stenographer 2024 - Eligibility - Job Profile - Career Growth - Salary - Exam Pattern - All Explained

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released notification for recruitment of Stenographers in various ministries and departments of central government.
There are mainly two types of Stenographer vacancies:
1. Grade C Stenographers (also called Personal Assistant), and,
2. Grade D Stenographers (Junior Stenos)
Here in this blog, I have discussed all the necessary details of SSC Stenographer 2024 recruitment examination.

Important Dates:

Form Filling Starts: 26th July 2024
Form Filling Ends: 17th August 2024 (till 11 PM)
Last date to pay fees: 18th August 2024 (till 11 PM)
Window for "Application Form Correction": 27th August to 28th August 2024 (till 11 PM).
Tentative Date of Computer Based Examination: September Last/Early October 2024.

Application Fees:
General/EWS/OBC: ₹100
SC/ST/Female/ESM/PwBD: ₹0 (Nil)

Vacancies:
This year there are about "2006 vacancies" for Stenographers in various ministries and departments.
This may even increase/decrease in future. So it's not final, but "tentative vacancy".


Salary:
1. For Steno Grade-D: It is a Group-C post and it's salary is of Level-4 (5200-20200, 2400 Grade Pay).
2. For Steno Grade-C: It is a Group-B post and it's salary is of Level-6 (9300-34800, 4200 Grade Pay) and Level-7 (9300-34800, 4600 Grade Pay).


Job Profile (Work and Responsibilities):

1. Crafting speeches by recording the words of senior officials (which requires use of stenography skills).
2. Participating in press conferences, documenting conference details and speeches, and contributing to the creation of press releases.
3. Drafting Notices, letters, notices, etc.
4. Assisting ministers and officers in crucial government proceedings (taking phone calls, fixing/scheduling meetings and appointments, etc).
5. Maintaining records of all calls, documents, files, notices, press releases, etc, in the office.
6. Collaborating with the Public Relations officer to provide information regarding the government’s position on various issues.
7. Performing other related tasks as assigned by senior officer.


Is Steno Grade-D equivalent to Upper Division Clerks?

Stenographer Grade-D is equivalent to UDC in following ways:
1. It's salary is of level-4, which is same as that of a UDC.
2. UDC and Steno-D are a part of Central Civil Service Group 'C', and are considered as equal.
3. In departmental competitive exam, both UDC and Steno-D are eligible for promotion to the post of Assistant (level-6).


Is Steno Grade-C equivalent to Assistant Section Officers?

Stenographer Grade-C is equivalent to ASO in following ways:
1. It's salary is of level-7, which is same as that of a ASO.
2. ASO and Steno-C are a part of Central Civil Service Group 'B', and are considered as equal.
3. In departmental competitive exam, both ASO and Steno-C are eligible for promotion to the post of Section Officer (level-8).


Career Growth/Promotion of Stenographer Grade-D and Grade-C:

Grade-D Stenographer is a Group-C post of 2400 GP, which gets promotion in following order:
1. After 10 years: Eligible for promotion from Steno Grade-D to Steno Grade-C (Personal Assistant Grade), which has a salary of level-6 (9300-34800, 4200 GP), and is a Group-B post.

2. After next 5 years: Eligible for promotion from Steno Grade-C (Personal Assistant Grade) to Steno Grade-C (Private Secretary Grade), which has a salary of level-7 (9300-34800, 4600 GP), and is a Group-B post.

{{Remember: There are two types of Grade-C Stenographer: Personal Assistant (4200 GP) and Private Secretary (4600 GP)}}

3. After next 5-8 years: Eligible for LDCE (5 years)/promotion (8 years) from Steno Grade-C (Private Secretary Grade) to Steno Grade-B (Senior Private Secretary Grade) which has a salary of level-8 (9300-34800, 4800 GP), and is a Group-B post.

4. After next 4 years: Non-functional Grade (NFSG) upgradation to level-10 (15600-39100, 5400 GP) (post remains Senior Private Secretary, but is now called Steno Grade-A, and is still a Group-B post).

5. After 8 years of achieving Senior Private Secretary Grade (in 4800 GP, including NFSG upgrade of 5400 GP): Eligible for promotion to Principal Private Secretary (PPS), which has a salary of level-11 (15600-39100, 6600 GP), and is now a Group-A post.

6. After next 5 years: Eligible for promotion to Senior Principal Private Secretary (SPPS), which has a salary of level-12 (15600-39100, 7600 GP), and is a Group-A post.

7. After next 5 years: Eligible for promotion to Principal Staff Officer (PSO), which has a salary of level-13 (15600-39100, 8700 GP), and is a Group-A post. And this is the highest post in Central Secretariat Stenographer Service.


Educational Qualification (as on 17.08.2024):
12th passed or equivalent from a recognised board.

Skills:
Steno Grade-D (English): 80 WPM English Stenography speed (800 words dictation for 10 minutes) and the dictated matter is to be transcribed on computer in 50 minutes (minimum average typing speed of 16 WPM).

Steno Grade-D (Hindi): 80 WPM Hindi Stenography speed (800 words dictation for 10 minutes) and the dictated matter is to be transcribed on computer in 65 minutes (minimum average typing speed of 13 WPM).

Steno Grade-C (English): 100 WPM English Stenography speed (1000 words dictation for 10 minutes) and the dictated matter is to be transcribed on computer in 40 minutes (minimum average typing speed of 25 WPM).

Steno Grade-C (Hindi): 100 WPM Hindi Stenography speed (1000 words dictation for 10 minutes) and the dictated matter is to be transcribed on computer in 55 minutes (minimum average typing speed of 19 WPM).


Age limit (as on 01.08.2024):
Minimum Age: 18 years
Maximum Age: 27 years (for Steno D) and 30 years (for Steno C).

Age relaxation in upper age limit:
1. 3 years for OBC candidates.
2. 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
3. 10 years for Physically Handicapped (Unreserved/EWS).
4. 13 years for Physically Handicapped (OBC).
5. 15 years for Physically Handicapped (SC/ST).
6. For Ex-servicemen: 03 years after deduction of the military service rendered from the actual age as on closing date of receipt of online application.
7. Central government civilian employees who have rendered at least 3 years of regular and continuous service as on closing date for receipt of online applications, are eligible to appear for Group-C posts of SSC (Steno-D) till 40 years of age (for UR/EWS/OBC)/till 45 years of age (for SC/ST).
8. Windows/Divorced Women are eligible to appear for Group-C posts of SSC (Steno-D) till 35 years of age (for UR/EWS/OBC)/till 40 years of age (for SC/ST).


Selection Process:
Selection will be done on the basis of merit list prepared by marks scored in Computer Based Examination (single exam) and passing the skill test.
Skill test is only qualifying in nature. Cutoff and departments allocation will be done only on the basis of marks scored in Computer Based Examination.

Exam Pattern:
1. General Intelligence and Reasoning: 50 questions (of 50 marks)
2. General Awareness: 50 questions (of 50 marks)
3. English Language and Comprehension: 100 questions (of 100 marks)

Total Questions: 200 questions (of 200 marks).
Total time: 120 minutes (2 hours).
Negative marking: 1/4th (-0.25 marks).


How to apply for SSC Stenographer 2024?

Follow these eight simple steps:
1. One-Time Registration: Register yourself on SSC website (ssc.gov.in), and generate registration number and password. If you have done it before, then ignore this step.

2. Log in to your SSC account, with that registration number and password.

3. In the Live Application Section, you will find option of Stenographer recruitment, click on Apply.

4. Now fill all the personal and academic details, choose your centre preferences, etc.

5. For uploading photos, you'll have to capture live photo of yourself. For this purpose, you have to install "MySSC" app from Google PlayStore, and login with the same registration number and password.

6. Once you capture your live photograph, return to the SSC website, upload your signature, and proceed.

7. Preview all your details, and once you have verified, click on submit.

8. Now pay the ₹100 fees (if you are UR/OBC/EWS male candidate), and your application is complete.
