UPSC Combined Geo-scientist Examination (CGSE) 2025 - Eligibility - Vacancy - Salary - Selection Process -All Details Explained

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released notification for inviting applications for Combined Geo-scientist Examination (CGSE) 2025, for recruitment of Geologists, Geophysicists, Chemist Group A and Scientist B (Hydrogeology, Chemical, Geophysics).
Here in this blog, I have explained all the necessary details related to this recruitment.

Category-I : Posts in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines.
(i) Geologist, Group A: 16 vacancies
(ii) Geophysicist, Group A: 06 vacancies
(iii) Chemist, Group A: 02 vacancies
Category-II : Posts in the Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation.
(i) Scientist ‘B’(Hydrogeology), Group ‘A’: 13 vacancies

Educational Qualification:
1. For Geologists:

Master’s degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resource Management or Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Geochemistry from a recognised university.

2. For Geophysicists/Scientist B (Geophysics)/Assistant Geophysicists:
M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or M.Sc. (Geophysics) or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or M.Sc (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a recognised university.

3. Chemist Group A/Scientist B (Chemical):
M.Sc. in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry from a recognised university.

4. Scientist B (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologists:
Master’s degree in Geology or applied Geology or Marine Geology or Hydrogeology from a recognised university.

5. Assistant Chemist Group B:
Master of Science or Integrated Master of Science in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry or Physical Chemistry or Inorganic Chemistry or Organic Chemistry or Hydro-Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry from a recognized university

NOTE: Candidates who have given their last semester exam, and are waiting for results, can also apply for this examination {they will have to submit the proof of passing the exam in the Detailed Application Form (DAF) before the Mains Exam}


Age Limit (as on 01/01/2025):
Minimum: 21 years
Maximum: 32 years
The upper age limit is relaxable by:
(a) 3 years for OBC-NCL.
(b) 5 years for SC/ST.
(c) 3 years for Defence Services Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof.
(d) 5 years for Ex-Servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st January, 2025 and have been released on completion of assignment/on account of physical disability.
(e) 10 years for Physically/Intellectually disabled person.
(f) 7 years (maximum) for the posts of Geologists/Geophysicists/Chemist Group A in Geological Survey of India (GSI) for candidates who are already employed/working in GSI.
(g) 7 years (maximum) for the posts of Scientist B/Assistant Hydrogeologists/Assistant Geophysicists/Assistant Chemists in Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) for candidates who are already employed/working in CGWB.


Salary:
1. For Geologists/Geophysicists/Chemist Group A/Scientist B:

Pay level: level-10 (₹56,100 - 1,77,500)
Grade Pay: 5400
Basic Pay: ₹56,100
Dearness Allowance (DA): 50% of Basic Pay
Travelling Allowance: ₹7200 + DA (50%)
House Rent Allowance (for X-city): 30% of Basic Pay
Gross Salary: ₹1,12,000 approx.
Net in-hand salary: ₹93,500 approx.

2. For Assistant Geophysicists/Assistant Hydrogeologists/Assistant Chemist Group B:
Pay level: level-8 (₹47,600 - 1,51,100)
Grade Pay: 4800
Basic Pay: ₹47,600
Dearness Allowance (DA): 50% of Basic Pay
Travelling Allowance: ₹3600 + DA (50%)
House Rent Allowance (for X-city): 30% of Basic Pay
Gross Salary: ₹91,500 approx.
Net in-hand salary: ₹78,300 approx.


Selection Process:
The selection to the service will be done in three stages:
A. Stage-I: Preliminary Exam (Objective Type) - 400 marks.
B. Stage-II: Mains Exam (Descriptive Type) - 600 marks.
C. Stage-III: Interview - 200 marks.

A. Stage-I: Preliminary Exam (Objective Type)
1. For Stream-1 {for Geologists/Scientist B (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologists}
• Paper-1: General Studies: 100 marks (2 hours)
• Paper-2: Geology/Hydrogeology: 300 marks (2 hours)
Total: 400 marks
Negative Marking: 1/3rd.

2. For Stream-2 {for Geophysicists/Scientist B (Geophysics)/Assistant Geophysicists}
• Paper-1: General Studies: 100 marks (2 hours)
• Paper-2: Geophysics: 300 marks (2 hours) Total: 400 marks
Negative Marking: 1/3rd.

3. For Stream-3 {for Chemist/Scientist B (Chemical)/Assistant Chemist}
• Paper-1: General Studies: 100 marks (2 hours)
• Paper-2: Chemistry: 300 marks (2 hours)
Total: 400 marks
Negative Marking: 1/3rd.

B. Stage-II: Mains Exam (Descriptive Type)
1. For Stream-1 (for Geologists)
• Paper-1: Geology: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-2: Geology: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-3: Geology: 200 marks (3 hours)
Total: 600 marks

2. For Stream-2 {for Geophysicists/Scientist B (Geophysics)/Assistant Geophysicists}
• Paper-1: Geophysics: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-2: Geophysics: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-3: Geophysics: 200 marks (3 hours)
Total: 600 marks

3. For Stream-3 {for Chemist/Scientist B (Chemical)/Assistant Chemist}
• Paper-1: Chemistry: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-2: Chemistry: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-3: Chemistry: 200 marks (3 hours)
Total: 600 marks

4. For Stream-4 {for Scientist B (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologists}
• Paper-1: Geology: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-2: Geology: 200 marks (3 hours)
• Paper-3: Hydrogeology: 200 marks (3 hours)
Total: 600 marks

C. Stage-III: Interview
• Candidates are shortlisted for Interview on the basis of marks scored in Mains examination.
• Interview is of 200 marks, and tests your overall personality.
• Final Merit for selection in the service will be prepared on the basis of marks scored in both Mains and Interview (600 + 200 = 800 marks).
